Announcing Full Page Test 2.0: Test your site’s load time, find bottlenecks, get performance-boosting tips

Filed Under (Website Monitoring) by admin on 28-10-2011

The full announcement is over at the Pingdom blog, but we thought this was interesting enough to all of you that we included a shorter announcement here in Royal Pingdom as well.

<img class="alignright" title="Pingdom Tools for webmasters" src="http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/91f39_Pingdom-Tools-logo.png” alt=”Pingdom Tools for webmasters” width=”150″ height=”59″ />After more than six million performed tests, we thought it was time to give version 1.0 of our popular Full Page Test in Pingdom Tools a well-earned break. Actually, we’re giving it a full retirement, umbrella drinks and sunny beaches included. But don’t worry, version 2.0 of the Full Page Test is here to save the day! It’s still in beta, a few tweaks remain, but it’s fully functional so don’t hesitate to give it a spin.

This new Full Page Test is still completely free to use. It still helps you profile your website’s performance. But now it’s even better.

When we say it’s better, we really mean it. We’ve rebuilt the Full Page Test from scratch and have worked hard to make this brand new version super useful to you. Although we may be a bit biased – it’s our baby, after all – we think it’s pretty awesome. The ultimate judges will of course be you, our users, but we suspect you’ll agree with us once you’ve tried it out.

Analyze and optimize website performance

The whole point of our Full Page Test tool is to help you analyze the load speed of your websites and learn how to make them faster. With the help of this tool you can identify what about a web page is fast, slow, too big, what best practices you’re not following, and so on. We have tried to make it useful both to experts and novices alike.

In short, we want it to be a free, easy-to-use tool to help webmasters and web developers everywhere optimize the performance of their websites.

You can read the full announcement over at our Pingdom “product” blog, including more info about the new features and how it works. Or why not go right ahead and try it out? Find out how to make your website faster.

Social network popularity around the world in 2011

Filed Under (Website Monitoring) by admin on 21-10-2011

<img title="social networks" src="http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/f8528_111021-social-networks.png” border=”0″ alt=”social networks” width=”580″ height=”77″ />

Online social networks are everywhere these days, a truly global phenomenon. But where are the different social networks having the most success in terms of popularity? That is what we’ll try to answer in this post.

We have included 11 social networks in this survey: <a href="http://<a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/03/17/facebook-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/”>facebook.com/”><a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/03/17/facebook-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/”>facebook, <a href="http://<a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/05/04/twitter-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/”>twitter.com/”><a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/05/04/twitter-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/”>twitter, LinkedIn, <a href="https://plus.google.com/”>google+, Orkut, Tumblr, FourSquare, MySpace, LiveJournal, Hi5 and Bebo.

Please note that this isn’t meant to be an exhaustive list covering all social networks out there. There are literally hundreds of them.

To map popularity, we’ve used google search statistics (their <a href="http://www.google.com/insights/search/”>Insights for Search tool). This will give us a good indication of the interest – or popularity, if you will – of a social network in a given region. We’re basing this survey on search results from the past 90 days, so it’s a reasonably large, up-to-date sample. After all, we want to know the situation right now.

A few initial observations

We’ve gone through and summarized some of the information for you, but please feel free to scroll down and check out the individual social networks you’re interested in.

Top countries for each social network (in terms of interest)

  • <a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/03/17/facebook-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/”>facebook is most popular in Turkey and Venezuela.
  • <a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/05/04/twitter-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/”>twitter is most popular in Venezuela and Brazil.
  • LinkedIn is most popular in the Netherlands and India.
  • google+ is most popular in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
  • Tumblr is most popular in the Philippines and Brazil.
  • FourSquare is most popular in Indonesia and Malaysia.
  • MySpace is most popular in Puerto Rico and Myanmar (Burma).
  • LiveJournal is most popular in Singapore and Russia.
  • Hi5 is most popular in Thailand and Romania.
  • Bebo is most popular in Ireland and New Zealand.
  • Orkut is most popular in Brazil and Paraguay. The interest shown for Orkut in Brazil far outstrips that of any other country.

It’s worth pointing out that this doesn’t necessarily mean that the majority of users come from these countries. We’re talking about sheer interest in a service. The size of the local user base will depend on the size of the Internet population in that country.

Also note that we haven’t compared the social networks against each other. This is a survey that examines where each social network has managed to garner the most interest in its service.

Some standout countries in this survey

  • Brazil is in the top five for <a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/05/04/twitter-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/”>twitter, Orkut, Tumblr and Bebo.
  • Singapore is in the top five for LinkedIn, Tumblr, FourSquare and LiveJournal.
  • The United States is in the top five for LinkedIn, Tumblr and MySpace.
  • The Philippines is in the top five for Tumblr, FourSquare and LiveJournal.
  • India is in the top five for LinkedIn and Orkut.
  • The United Kingdom is in the top five for LinkedIn and Bebo.
  • Indonesia is in the top five for <a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/05/04/twitter-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/”>twitter and FourSquare.
  • Venezuela and Turkey are in the top five for <a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/03/17/facebook-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/”>facebook and <a href="http://www.website-monitoring.com/blog/2010/05/04/twitter-facts-and-figures-history-statistics/”>twitter.

That was just a brief summary. Why don’t you go ahead and have a look for yourself? We’ve listed the results for all the included social networks here below. We’ve also included direct links to google Insights for Search if you want to dig even deeper into the results and play around a little.

Final notes

As you noticed, we only included a limited list of social networks in this survey. For example, we didn’t include social networks that are regional by nature, i.e. don’t have a global focus. There are plenty of country- or language-specific social networks that are successful in individual countries, for example VKontakte in Russia and the Russian-speaking countries of the former Soviet Union, Mixi in Japan, RenRen and Qzone in China, Hyves in the Netherlands, etc.

If you’re curious, you can check out a similar survey we did three years ago, in August of 2008. We thought an update was long overdue, since things change so rapidly in social media.

Huge Internet milestone just around the corner: 100 million registered .COM domain names

Filed Under (Website Monitoring) by admin on 19-10-2011

<img alt="Dot com" src="http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/f5879_dotcom.png” title=”Dot com” class=”alignright” width=”150″ height=”60″ />The Internet’s favorite top-level domain is close to hitting a huge milestone. The .com domain is now on the brink of reaching 100 million registered domain names. It’s a real triumph for what is already by far the world’s largest top-level domain – it accounts for around 45% of all domain names.

It’s not quite there yet, though. There are currently 98 million registered .com domain names, so there are still two million to go. Judging by the chart here below from <a href="http://www.registrarstats.com/TLDdomainCounts.aspx”>Registrar Stats, we will reach the 100-million milestone within a few months, sometime around the end of this year.

<img title="Dot com domain name registrations” src=”http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/330e4_111019-com-domain-3.png” border=”0″ alt=”Dot com domain name registrations” width=”580″ height=”304″ />

The .com domain is one of the original top-level domains on the Internet, having been around since 1985 and the start of the domain Name System that we all depend upon so much.

To give you an idea of how the .com domain has grown since its inception, we’ve put together this chart for you:

<img title="Dot com domain name registrations since the start in 1985″ src=”http://www.website-monitoring.eu/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/f4bda_111019-com-growth.png” border=”0″ alt=”Dot com domain name registrations since the start in 1985″ width=”580″ height=”300″ />

The number for December 2010 is an estimate based on the Registrar Stats chart and an old <a href="http://www.verisigninc.com/en_US/why-verisign/research-trends/domain-name-industry-brief/index.xhtml?loc=en_US”>domain name industry brief from Verisign. The others come from <a href="http://www.vb.com/domain-timeline.htm”>BV.com.

Quite amazing, isn’t it? Especially when you compare today’s numbers with the modest beginnings in the 1980s and early 1990s, before the World Wide Web (you may have heard of it) made everyone flock to the Internet.

P.S. If you wonder about the jagged section in the chart from Registrar Stats, <a href="http://royal.pingdom.com/2011/08/31/visual-rise-and-fall-domain-tasting/”>here is the explanation.
